Saarburg

This post covers our 3 nights spent in Saarburg with more tales of Matt's boxers and a downhill toboggan run.

Leaving Oger we headed east through the Champagne region, stopping several times to take photos of vineyards, wildflowers, sunflowers and beautiful views. Passing one vineyard, Marving Gaye's "Heard it through the grapevine" came on to our ipod, freaky!

This certainly is a very picteresque part of France. Just outside Verdun the GPS guided us along a narrow country road. There were signs up from France's defence ministry saying it was forbidden to enter the land either side of the road, are there still unexploded shells here after so many years? We passed a French WW1 cemetery then through town and onto a motorway. On the motorway Ace's roof flew open and a frantic Sarah was jumping up trying to pull it back down. Looks like somebody forgot to close it properly... oops!

We headed briefly into Luxembourg then into Germany where we found a great campsite in the town of Saarburg. We decided we needed a few days R&R after such a hectic time in France. It was such a luxury to have electricity again after 6 days and even wifi!

On Saturday we decided to do 2 loads of washing. Taking our first load down Sarah asked me to check to make sure she hadn't dropped anything. I took down most of the second load. An hour later we went back to get things out of the dryer and Sarah noticed 2 pairs of blue boxer shorts on the grass at the side of the gravel road. The conversation went something like this...

"Oh no Matt, your pants!!
"They're not mine, some dirty b*stard has left his boxers on the ground!"

After several seconds inspecting them from afar, I plucked up the courage for a closer inspection where I found from the familar label they were mine after all. We are still debating on who dropped them, all we know is someone found them and put them on the grass. Oh the shame!

We had a pleasant walk around Saarburg on Saturday evening where a town festival was going on with lots of stalls, music and merry making. We went back today and it was still going on, Germans know how to party! We walked down to a chairlift and took a ride to the top of the hill where you can then go on a toboggan course. This was great fun, on our first go I reached a speed of 23 km/hour and Sarah go to 26 km/hour. I was determined to go on again, risking injury just to try and top her speed. I got to 35 km/hour on my second run! Yay! We shared some mini milk ice blocks afterwards in celebration!

We came back and cooked home made chicken stew and chocolate and strawberry cheesecake, yum! We're becoming good little chefs! Off to Luxembourg tomorrow then on to the Rhine and the Romantic Road of Bavaria. After that it's on to Switzerland and back into France. Hopefully that's the last you'll hear about my undergarments for a while!
